Safe Inside Your Cage
A day in the sun, safe inside your cage.
You’ll never have to worry about the dangerous strays.
With free medical, bedding, and food twice a day,
Do your worries about life slip away?
No mice in the field ready to play.
No friends or foes to meet on the way.
No laying in the grass under an oak tree.
No exploring the land. There is nothing to see.
Don’t jump on the table.
Stay off of the counter.
Stop licking the tub!
Why are you such a bother?
Can’t you see how much I care?
A house once full of plants is now bare.
I bought the drapes safe from your claws.
The furniture is tapped to discourage your paws.
I’ve given up so much for our snuggles and talks.
Naps galore.
No privacy for sure.
You know you are loved,
but do you want more?
~The leader of one of my writer's groups, the Mississippi Valley Writers Guild, challenges us every other week to write a poem or prose on a prompt topic. I find this to be an excellent opportunity to practice.
Please take 10 minutes and write a poem or prose about ‘pick a random photo off your cell phone and write about it.’ Have fun!
With Love, Niki B
